ABB Robotics, in collaboration with UK-based tech start-up AUAR, is working on using robotic micro-factories to construct affordable and sustainable low-energy timber homes. AUAR aims to address industry skills shortages, enhance sustainability, and improve health and safety by deploying robots in a global network of local micro-factories. These micro-factories will utilize sheet timber to construct energy-efficient and cost-effective buildings. AUAR recently completed a £2.6 million seed round led by deep-tech and AI fund Miles Ahead, with participation from ABB Robotics & Automation Ventures and other investors.

The integration of robotic automation into the construction process is seen as a solution to skills shortages, supply chain issues, project delivery, and quality control. AUAR's approach simplifies the supply chain by working with a single material and machine type, as opposed to the complex array of components typically found in conventional buildings. The production process involves cutting standard sheets of timber into components and assembling them into units that can be transported to the construction site. This allows for the construction of fully customized homes within a matter of weeks.

AUAR's micro-factory approach supports local job creation by promoting the use of micro-factories in close proximity to construction sites, facilitating coordination with local contractors and suppliers. The flexibility of the micro-factory model enables customization based on local market demands, with the ability to scale production by adding modular robot cells.

ABB Robotics is already involved in automating construction processes and has been utilized in modular assembly and 3D printing projects worldwide. The collaboration with AUAR follows ABB's partnership with German management consulting firm Porsche Consulting to develop innovative practices in modular housing manufacture.

By leveraging the speed, flexibility, and consistency of robots, combined with advancements in vision and AI technologies, ABB Robotics and AUAR aim to meet the increasing demand for affordable, sustainable, and high-quality housing. The collaboration seeks to provide new possibilities for homebuilders to deliver scalable and environmentally friendly homes.
