To date, more than 1.85 million 5G base stations have been built and put into operation in the PRC, Xinhua News Agency reports, citing data from the Ministry of Industry and Informatization (MII) of the PRC.
In particular, almost 300,000 5G base stations were built in the country in the second quarter of 2022, MPI spokesman Wang Peng said at a press conference on Tuesday.
China plans to build and put into operation another 600,000 5G base stations during 2022 and accelerate the modernization of the industrial Internet, Wang Peng added.
The accelerated construction of 5G networks "strengthens the foundation of the digital economy," a ministry spokesman said. Thus, in the first half of 2022, digital industries in the country, such as online shopping, online education and telemedicine, showed “favorable growth dynamics.” As of the end of June this year, the income of sectors such as the production of electronic information products, the software industry, communications and the Internet exceeded 10 trillion yuan (83 trillion rubles).
In January 2022, the European Union watchdog warned that Europe was lagging behind North America and Asia in 5G rollout.
