Performance test of coaxial speaker cable

Coaxial cable assembly testing usually only requires a sophisticated 2-port vector network analyzer (VNA). The VNA can send and receive accurate signals in a wide frequency range from its ports, and measure the time required for the signal to travel from one port to another and back to the originating port. This ability can accurately measure scattering parameters or other network parameters, which can then be used to calculate the electrical performance characteristics of coaxial cable assemblies.

Cut-off frequency

The VNA whose frequency range exceeds the cut-off frequency of the coaxial cable assembly can perform frequency scanning to show the degradation of the transmission line performance of the coaxial cable. Then determine the maximum frequency or cut-off frequency of the coaxial cable assembly. The cut-off frequency of a coaxial cable directly depends on the geometry of the cable and connector used, so the cut-off frequency can also be determined relatively accurately through physical measurements.

Insertion loss and attenuation of coaxial speaker cable

Insertion loss is a measure of the energy loss of the signal sent from the first port of the VNA and received by the second port of the VNA. Since the coaxial cable assembly should be a symmetrical passive network, the S12 and S21 responses should be the same. Considering that there are frequency-related losses associated with conductors and dielectrics, the insertion loss of coaxial cable assemblies usually decreases with increasing frequency. Generally speaking, coaxial cable components are best to have as low insertion loss as possible, and specify the insertion loss for a given application.

Attenuation is only the loss per unit length of the coaxial cable, which largely depends on the dielectric loss of the coaxial cable. The resistance loss of the inner and outer conductors will also have an effect. Since these losses are also frequency-dependent, they usually provide attenuation information at a given frequency, worst case, or frequency range.

VSWR

VSWR is a measure of the maximum to minimum voltage of the standing wave generated by the impedance defect in the transmission path. VSWR can be derived from the reflected S parameter, which is a measure of the power transmitted through port 1 and the power reflected back to port 1 after the calibration plane. Although physical changes may result in slightly different port parameters, VSWR should be slightly balanced on each side of the coaxial cable assembly.

Characteristic impedance of coaxial speaker cable

The characteristic impedance and capacitance can be determined by the reflection coefficient derived from the S11/S22 parameters. Generally speaking, the specified characteristic impedance of the coaxial cable assembly is preferably the same as the port impedance of the coaxial connector and the characteristic impedance of the coaxial cable assembly. This requires precise matching and precise structure in order to maintain consistent impedance throughout the component structure. More sophisticated cables may exhibit smaller impedance changes.
