LTC4366 uses floating topology high-voltage surge suppressor application solutions

For any system, protecting sensitive electronic circuits from voltage transients is an indispensable part, whether it is automotive, industrial, aerospace, or battery-powered consumer applications. Linear Technology provides numerous solutions for these applications with its series of surge suppressors.

The LTC4366 is a high-voltage surge suppressor with a floating topology, which enables it to suppress transient voltages far exceeding its absolute maximum ratings. Two shunt regulators allow the device to float upward with the power supply and suppress transients to user-defined levels. The voltage regulation is done with an external MOSFET controlled by LTC4366. The nominal value of the operating voltage can reach several thousand volts, and the only limitation is the MOSFET safe operating area (SOA) used with the device.

When the output reaches the clamp voltage, the timer starts to run. When the timer expires, LTC4366 will turn off the MOSFET.

The timer and clamp voltage are adjustable, thus providing users with full flexibility. During operation, the entire circuit consumes only a few milliamps of current. The device's current can be less than 20µA during shutdown, making it an ideal solution for designs that focus on power consumption. High-voltage applications include protecting devices from motor transients, coupled overvoltages, incorrect input power, or power failures.

Traditional protection circuits rely on bulky inductors, capacitors, fuses and transient voltage suppressors to clamp transients, while the LTC4366 provides protection by continuously adjusting the transients. The LTC4366 is available in tiny 8-pin TSOT-23 and 3mm x 2mm DFN packages.
