Is there any difference between ESD diodes and TVS diodes?

Regarding ESD diodes and TVS diodes, many people still don't know the difference between the two silly, thinking that they are the same diode. ESD diodes, also known as TVS diode arrays, are single or multiple ESD protection devices with specific functions designed by multiple TVS dies or diodes with different layouts. TVS diodes, also known as transient voltage suppression diodes, are a new type of high-efficiency circuit protection components developed in the Zener diode process. So, with regard to ESD diodes and TVS diodes, what is the difference between the two? Next, talk about the differences between them in terms of power, packaging, and applications.

1. Power

The working principle of ESD diode and TVS diode is the same, but in terms of power, the difference between the two is still very big. ESD diodes generally have powers of 50W, 90W, 100W, 200W, 350W, 400W, 450W, 500W, etc. The power of ESD diodes is generally relatively low. The power of TVS diodes are: 200W, 400W, 500W, 600W, 1000W, 1500W, 3000W, 3600W, 4600W, 5000W, 6000W, 6600W, 15000W, 30000W, and even ultra-high power TVS diodes.

The packaging of ESD diodes and TVS diodes is completely different. ESD diode packages are: SOT-23, SOD-523, DFN0603-D, DFN1006-2L, SOD-323F, DFN-2L, SOD-323, SOT-353, DFN0603-2L, DFN2010-8L, etc. TVS diode packages are: DO-218AB, SMA/DO-214AC, SMB/DO-214AA, SMC/DO-214AB, SOD-123, DO-41, DO-15, DO-201, R-6/P600, NA and many more.

The function of ESD diode is anti-static. The prerequisite for electrostatic protection requires its capacitance value to be sufficiently low, generally between 1PF-3.5PF, which is mainly used for board-level protection. The TVS diode function is to prevent surge and overvoltage, mainly used in primary and secondary protection. When choosing ESD electrostatic protection diodes, more fancy is the ESD rating (HBM/MM), LEVEL and junction capacitance of IEC61000-4-2. The selection of TVS transient suppression diodes is more fancy is the breakdown voltage, clamping voltage, operating voltage, packaging and power.

Although the difference between ESD and TVS is relatively large, in practical applications, the two complement each other and are closely connected.
