The US International Trade Commission intends to launch an investigation into Samsung and TSMC in connection with the companies' alleged infringement of patent rights related to chips and mobile devices based on them.
The Commission noted that the investigation started after receiving a complaint filed by Daedalus Prime LLC in September 2022. The complaint relates to 14nm or later chips manufactured by Samsung and TSMC chips manufactured using the 16nm process and later.
The investigation will also affect smartphones, tablets and smartwatches that use the relevant microcircuits. The plaintiff seeks to block Samsung and TSMC from importing and selling all patent infringing products cited in the complaint. A similar complaint was also filed against Qualcomm.
According to The Register, Daedalus Prime is a non-practicing organization (NPE) that owns a patent for a product or process, but does not intend to develop it. In other words, it makes money by licensing technology under its patents to other companies. In the case of Samsung, TSMC and Qualcomm, Intel technologies were used, the rights to which were previously acquired by Daedalus Prime.
The plaintiff intends to receive compensation from companies for the use of patented technologies. Otherwise, they face a ban on importing electronics to the US. The US International Trade Commission said it had not made a decision on the case.
